Princetown was an extremely isolated Dartmoor village, so where better to start to build a prison in 1806 to house French prisoners from the Napoleonic wars and American War of Independence. The prison is still populated today and you can see its complete history by visiting the Dartmoor Prison Museum. You can also visit the High Moorland Visitor Centre which provides an impressive visual and audible display of the complete history of Princetown, in fact, just by entering this building you step back into history as this was once the Dutchy Hotel, where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle began The Hound of the Baskervilles.
